Being a continuous line of authority which extends from the top of the organization to the lowest level, the chain of command clarifies who reports to whom. Two concepts are important in the discussion of the chain of command. Authority refers to rights inherent in a position to give orders and expect them to be obeyed. The principle of unity of command states that a worker should have only one person to whom she is directly responsible. These concepts have less relevance today due to advances in computer and a tendency for greater employee participation (Jivani, 2010).
Chain of Command, also known as scalar chain, is the line of formal authority in an organization. In general, it can be seen in the chart of the organization, which identifies the roles of the individual and those who must respond within the organizational structure. Thus, the chain of command is the formal definition of the meaning of communication within the organization, and the responsibility of each individual who is part of it.
It may sound silly, but it makes a big difference in our routine work. Know what “square” each may represent greater agility in decision making, the drastic reduction of conflicts of authority, cost reduction and all this will represent a client being better served.
There are several points of view about the Chain of Command in business, most modern visions and other more conservative. I think the choice will depend on the stage of your company and also the cultural level managers. Do not even try to start with a complicated model, because the difficulties that will be abandoned before it is deployed.
Either way, the organization of your company can represent the life she has ahead. The consumer in this increasingly demanding with the products and services it has received, the competition is increasingly fierce, cost control is becoming more sensitive and the search for team productivity constant. This signifies that if you stand still in time, soon will not have to take care of business.
Whatever idea or suggestion an employee wants to give, it is important to ensure there is a facility for individuals to bypass their line manager if necessary. Line managers can be resistant to ideas from their own people for a variety of reasons. They might fear the person making the suggestion might be taken away from them in place to it. They might think the idea does not reflect well on their department.
They might see some implicit criticism of themselves in the suggestion. They might have political agendas or prejudices which lead them to block ideas coming from their team. If all initial ideas require sign-off by the first line manager then the flow of ideas will be inhibited in some areas (Claesson, Lindqvist, Ortenwall, & Herlitz, 2012).
