Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

Introduction

This paper involves a discussion of the security issues and possible solutions in the mobile ad hoc network. The important characteristics of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) include self-organisation and wireless medium. The wireless MANET is easy to set up that makes it attractive for computing professionals. The lack of centralised management and absence of boundary makes MANET vulnerable to diverse threats. The nodes in a MANET are vulnerable to modify or discard routing information. The MANET is susceptible to different types of viral attack. The viruses can attack the network any time and target any node. The attacks of Ad Hoc Mobile Networks include passive eavesdropping , message contamination, data tampering, active interfering, and others.

Ad hoc networks are referred to as a group of mobile wireless nodes that come together to form an impermanent network without the aid of any centralized monitoring or administrator. Such situation i.e. the networks, one node “a mobile” could possibly enlist all other nodes in sending data packets to its destination but because of partial transmission range in the wireless network, every nodes on the network operate not only as host but correspondingly as a router thereby forwarding the packet to ever node on the network that may not be among the direct transmission range hence the network is open to security vulnerability and threat attack (Biswas and Ali, 2007).

Aim of the project

This project is aimed at analysing the overall security challenges and vulnerability in mobile ad hoc network.

Objectives of the Project

Era where PCs only are used in the process of data transmission on a networks are far passed gone history with the advent of smart phones and mobile gadget that can virtually perform in place of PCs or laptops, the recent year have experience data transmission and communication largely on mobile devices such as Smartphone, PDAs, Laptops etc. most of the mentioned devices commutations via wireless network ad hoc providing users easier network access. This has made the wireless network hot technology in the industry and as the technology evolves; security bridges and attacks also wittiness its evolution. The objectives of the project are:

To provide a synopsis of security goals that need to be achieved to ensure secure MANET communication.

To presents potential security exploits in ad hoc network.

Explore security goals which needs achieved to certify a secure network.

To Highlights threats imposed in individual network layers.

To analyse possible solutions to prevent security threats in MANET

Legal and Ethical Concerns

In this section the legal and ethical issues in project development are taken in to consideration. The major two points discuss here are the legal right to project documentation once the project is completed and identification of restrictions research.
