Introduction

The effectiveness of any manager in the context of an organizational environment is his ability to motivate the employees and be able to attain the relevant professional objectives. The success of the manager is directly correlated with the performance of the employees, because if the employees do not feel motivated or encouraged to perform their own specified tasks, the overall management objective will not be achieved. The manager has to maintain a comprehensive perspective where the have to ensure that the long term organizational goals are achieved. On the other had the employees are only concerned with their own limited short term professional goals (Hofstede, 1993). It is important to notice that both of these goals are completely interlinked and neither can be achieved interdependently. It is the task of the manager to ensure that the employees of the company stay aligned with the respective organizational goals, and strive to attain better performances.

In the current business environment several management ideologies and theories are implemented by various organizations, to be able to achieve operational efficiency and attain a substantial competitive advantage. Majority of the management theories have similar objectives, which is to attain the highest amount of organizational efficiency and enhance the performance level of the employees; however they differ in the core ideology. In the traditional perspective the employees were considered as bureaucratic components of the organization, and lacked the creative skills to be able to contribute to the organizational initiatives. This is why the employees were given minimal autonomy and they had to perform repetitive tasks. However in the perspective of the contemporary business environment, this view has been drastically changed, where the employees are now considered as the most important and valuable component of the organizational setup. The current business environment the consumers have become highly empowered and sensitive to the global trends. Hence the concepts of consumer loyalty have become highly volatile ion nature, as the emergence of multiple global brands has given consumers numerous options. In this challenging global business environment, the organizations have to drastically alter their organizational setups and become highly flexible in nature, so that they are able to readily identify the consumer trends and make strategic decisions. In this scenario the management theory implemented by the organization would have a significant impact on the organizational culture and the decision making process.

Management by Objectives (MBO)

The concept of setting highly defined and detailed organizational tasks, within the employees was first introduced to the field of management by the visionary management writer Peter Drucker in the year 1954.
