Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

Leadership and management are accounted as the core responsibilities amongst all in the organisations. Both of the roles are inherently important for the purposes of furthering the occupational functions. These are important due to the fact that people cannot perform without some guidance or supervision. The leaders and managers provide direction to the actions of the people (Business and Innovation Skills, 2012, p. 22). In an organisation, the employees perform according to their job descriptions. The performance of the employees is the integral need of the organisations, but it is not only the performance which matters; people need to be aware of the objective and target for which they are performing. In any organisation, the employees are briefed about the duties which they have to perform and responsibilities which they bear. However, there is more to performance of the employees, according to their job descriptions. The employees need to fully understand and comprehend the vision and mission for which they are providing their services. This is where the role of leadership and management is incorporated (Labour Market Report, 2012, p. 12).

They provide direction to the actions of the employees. This direction in turn provides assistance to the employees in performing their duties in alignment with the organisational goals and vision (Feltham, 2003, P. n.d). Broadly evaluating the distinction between managerial and leader roles, it can be ascertained that the managers overlook the actions performed by the employees. The managers keep a check on the performance and the ratio between performance of the employees and productivity of the organisations (Boutall & Freeman, 2006, P. 87). In comparison to the leaders in general, the managers bear responsibilities of keeping a check on the performance of employees with special focus on the productivity of the organisation. However, it can be ascertained about the leaders that they have to indulge into more of the humanistic side of the workers; dealing with motivating them, building relations, directing them, inculcating vision in them and a large number of other activities related to the humanistic perspective.
