Abstract

This purpose of this research paper is to gain an understanding on management practices in the workplace. Several experts have classified management practices into five categories: planning, organizing, leading, controlling and staffing. This paper takes in Wal-Mart as a case study.

Introduction

Management is typically defined as a social process that involve responsibility for effective and economic planning and regulating of work processes of an organization in meeting the goals. Several experts have classified management practices into five fundamental functions of management of planning, organizing, leading, controlling and staffing. Thus, the aim of this paper to gain a comprehensive understanding on management practices of planning, organizing, leading, controlling and staffing and to do so, this paper takes in the case of Wal-Mart.

Discussion

Management practices of planning, organizing, leading, controlling and staffing are implemented in Wal-Mart in several selected manners; however, by many different people who work together to attain organizational goals and success, and thus, all members working in an organization need to put some efforts. Wal-Mart is the most renowned chain of retail stores across the world countries. In order to operate effective and successfully, Wal-Mart focuses on effective and strategic management practices. For organizational success, Wal-Mart's managers stress on how to strategically plan, organize, lead, control and staff.

Planning

Planning refers to a process through which managers choose the objectives and mission of the organization and takes essential initiative to attain the desired aims and goals. Simultaneously, managers must determine current and future market trends in the industry and bring innovation and change into the firm with the passage of time. There are several types of plans that can be managed from planning to define the overall objectives and purposes of a company to plan a certain action. Planning assists an organization in deciding its future strategy.

Planning is the first of the management practices. Here, the manager formulates a comprehensive plan of action intended at some organizational objective. For example, at Wal-Mart, the marketing manager has an objective of boosting sales figures in the month of July. Thus, marketing managers spend time in mapping out the essential steps that the manager and the sales team should take; thus, Wal-Mart can increase its sales. For this purpose, marketing manager takes some significant steps such as interact with past customers to see whether they are interested in making a purchase of additional products from Wal-Mart shelves, increasing the amount of needed consumer-to-sales rep contact, placing few items on sale, increasing marketing efforts in a certain region. Then, managers at Wal-Mart organize into a logical pattern so that managers and their team may pursue them (Soderquist, 2005).

Organizing

Organizing can be defined as the assigning and allocating of tasks and resources, respectively to people to allow them in attaining goals of an organization.
