Management of prison and employees satisfaction

Introduction

This case is all about the management of prison, and the employee's satisfaction within the prison. The case highlights that the prison in United States of America, has been assigned to plague with numerous physical altercations, and had three riots. Two were on separate cellblocks, and one in the chow hall. Apart from this, gang related violence has occurred in prison as, well. This gang related violence is usually because of racial lines. Furthermore, the staff has had numerous problems based on racial identity. Even during the shift change, staff arranged themselves according to the racial group. Also, when the prison tried to arrange diversity training, an all time high was reached in employee absence, and there were more employee arguments and disagreements. The training seemed to polarize the staff even further. It has become a source of concern because now it has been believed that some staff may essentially be turning a “blind eye” to inmate activities if the staff member and the inmate are of the same race. This naturally compromises the security of the institution and places everyone's safety in jeopardy. Upon attempting to improve employee racial relations in the prison institution, one can note that there appears to be two rough “group views” within that prison staff. There is one group who is “hard lined” and conservative. This group takes a punitive approach toward the inmate population. The other group is more “soft” and liberal in approach, and takes a less restrictive approach to human relations with the inmate population. This group seems to be at great odds with one another, and the irony is that there are members of each racial background and of both genders who subscribe to both views.
