Introduction

Manager is a person with the task of managing, handling and controlling people. Being a manager is a formal role designated to a person with some good interpersonal skills. A manger is supposed to carry out specific tasks and manage responsibilities. Controlling, decision making, handling people, manage timings, forming strategies are the key roles of a manger.

Nurse Manager is a role of extreme importance in a society. This requires skilled personnel with effective management of financial as well as personnel resource coordination. They are required to follow certain rules and regulations to meet the objectives of improving the patients' outcomes. Nursing Management demands balance between performing right things and design things to move in the right direction. Healthcare system of any country is of utmost importance because it is supposed to maintain the health of the society members. Nurse Managers require being very vigilant and diligent in performing their duties. Along with having good general managerial skills of controlling and decision making, they should possess extraordinary active listening skills, critical thinking ability and good skills to cope with the unpredicted situations. This profession requires great patience, persistence, following certain code of ethics and complete clinical and medical knowledge (Nursing Management, 2010, p.1).

Patient Group and Its Outcomes

The focus of this paper is nursing management skills and styles required to improve the outcomes of the patient group suffering from diabetes. Chronic disease patients require especial and vigilant care in hospitals and home. This is so because of the nature of the chronic diseases. Patients with chronic problems are likely to get readmit in hospitals, and this increases the burden on the healthcare system of the country. Considering this role of nursing management in helping this patient group to cope with this long term condition is critical and of immense significance.

According to the findings in 2011 around 2.9 million UK populations is suffering from diabetes (www.diabetes.org.uk, 2011, p.4). The severity of diabetes can be well judged from the fact that patients having acute diabetes problem are likely to have many other acute conditions like deteriorating heart condition, high blood pressure etc. This is the reason that the care of this patient group should properly be managed by the nursing staff in order to improve the outcomes.

Nurse Management Theory

Nurse Managers must utilize theoretical models to efficiently oversee quality care for patients in order to improve the patients' outcomes. Barbara Stevens Barnum describes in "Nursing Theory" that management theory helps the manager in guiding the placement of patients and staff nurses. It helps in administering the distribution of work and resources for the staff nurses (Sieloff & Raph, 2011, p.979). This helps in effectively managing care of the patients who need long term care for improving the outcomes of their health conditions.
