Healthcare organisations in the 21st century face continuing challenges in meeting the performance expectations of critical stakeholders, including consumers, payers, regulators, and other providers. As the "baby-boomer" generation ages, bringing high expectations and increased service volumes to the healthcare system, a new and overwhelming labour shortage is likely to emerge. Demand for top talent is intense, and individuals will choose organisations that afford them meaningful opportunities for growth and development.
Leadership and management have two different meanings; however they both play a significant role with one another. Leadership usually focuses on the external part of the healthcare organisation, management focus more on the internal part of the organisation. Leaders in a healthcare organisation have the responsibility of communicating and aligning themselves with outside groups that will be beneficial to the organisation, such partners, and community, venders, or influence other stakeholders such as the government agencies, the media and their organisations.
Leaders often have much more responsibilities than that of a manager, and both parties have a set of competencies that they must possess in order for the organisation to run effectively.Leaders must have the ability to set the direction or the mission of the organisation, they also need to motivate their stakeholders as well as their employees, a leader should be an effective spokesperson, they mist strategically plan the future of the organisation as well as transform the organisation so that it may continue to thrive in a downsizing economy, the leader must figure out ways to keep the organisation a float. However, as the leader tends to his or her responsibility, there must be another counterpart in the background making sure that the leader does accomplish the goal that set before them.
Buell (2009, 54-57) wrote a book On Becoming a Leader, in which he distinguishes the difference between a leader and a manager, some examples that were used as far a leadership he truly believes that leaders are born not made, for examples his take on leadership goes as follows: the leader innovates, the leader is an original, the leader develops, and the leader has a long-range perspective (Bookbinder & Shanks, 2007, 44-55).
