1. Executive Summary

The major concept behind knowledge management is that knowledge is such a source of advantage that brings success to the organization in this fast-moving and competitive world. Knowledge also keep the structure and systems of the organization, working. If knowledge management is appropriately utilized with in an organization, it will bring success to the firm. Making use of the right knowledge and bringing it to the appropriate user, helps in supporting individual and organizational performance. The success of knowledge management is evaluated by effectively employing and executing business processes with the knowledge content.

In this paper, we have analysed literature that explains what knowledge management systems are and how have they been formulated in today's competitive business environment. We have also studied why various businesses, which implement the knowledge management systems, fail or enjoy success. We have further discussed the factors essential for designing a successful knowledge management system. Other than this, we have also studied a case that has successfully implemented the knowledge management system. We have studied what success and issues the firm had to face while executing the system.

2. Introduction

Knowledge management is a concept through which an organization makes conscious efforts for gathering, systemizing, sharing and analysing knowledge according to the available resources, documents, and skills of people. In the year 1998, it was assumed that there are very few such organizations who understand the significance of knowledge management in a business operation. Advancement in technology and the means through which information is accessed and shared have led organizations to build up knowledge management frameworks.

According to Dalkir, Liebowitz (2011), the main objective of a knowledge management system is to propose the managers with the capability to systematize and establish appropriate content and expertise needed to address detailed business tasks and projects (Dalkir & Liebowitz, 2011, pp. 85-106).

Human knowledge is the main element that facilitates the production of goods and services. Whereas knowledge management, is a distinct theoretical point of view which is being employed in several fields of study. It is multifaceted; and encompasses professional practice along with effective social and technical systems that can help it run.

Caldwell, Davies et.al (2008), suggests that working with knowledge helps to understand the operations of organizations as systems. If effective work is to be produced it would want the establishment, distribution, and employment of information as raw material, which is then, processed by individuals and organizations into knowledge.
