Introduction

'The Travel Companion' is a store inside the BAA Gatwick airport. This store sells travel accessories and last minute hotel deals to travelers. The aim of the manager is to increase sales, maximise the shareholders wealth and simultaneously increase the public image of the store. In order to accomplish this goal, the manager needs to have a motivated work force, good communication and be fully aware of his or her individual performance skills. This assignment will look into the managerial, as well as, the leadership skills which are necessary to keep the workforce motivated and performance oriented. This assignment will also provide strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the manager. Motivational strategies will also be included in the assignment. It will also highlight the managerial skills which help a manager to progress further in the chosen career. A development plan which highlights the current performance, as well as, the desired future state of the manager will also be discussed.

Discussion

It is one of the most important things for a manager is to make sure that the employees in an organization remain motivated. It is the duty of a manager to consider the reasons that why do employees work and why do they choose a job. It is also important to know that why do the employees choose to remain with the organization, as well as, the manager. It is a common practice that managers do not think about such issues (Champy, pp.156-159, 1995). They are mostly content and happy with knowing the employees are performing their job and are meeting their targets. It is important for a manager to know and understand that employees can work in a much better way, and a much improved environment and pattern if they are motivated. If manager becomes able to understand the motivational needs of the employees, he can make them perform better and can make them achieve their targets in a much better way. It is one of the most crucial things that the manager needs to work at and understand. There are a number of management styles that a manager can pursue. However, if a manager needs to keep his employees motivated, and motivate them to achieve goals that they are not yet achieving. The usual way of looking into the managerial or leadership is autocratic and democratic. The managers or leaders who are autocratic implement their decisions and orders on the employees without considering or consenting with the employees. The leaders who fall under the category of being autocratic depend on their power and authority that comes from the fact that they enjoy the power because of their position in the company. The managers who follow the democratic style of management consider the employees a part of all the decisions that they are taking and that will affect the employees in one way or the other.
