Introduction

A systematic and periodic process that helps in assessment of an individual employee's performance on job productivity and performance under the organizational objectives and established criteria is known as performance appraisal. Performance appraisal can be used by an organization in managing the performance of its employees. Management of performance appraisal is of great importance as it helps the managers in identifying weaknesses and strengths of the employee in terms of their performance in completing their assigned tasks and duties. Performance appraisal data can be used to in one of the three methods. These methods are judgment evaluation, personnel and objective production. Normally performance appraisals are conducted annually but there are some organizations that are conducting it on monthly and quarterly basis as well. Performance appraisal is an important part of performance management system. Performance management system is a system that helps an organization as well as human resource department in getting the clear picture of the employee, process, system and department of the organization. An organization cannot get successful if it is not having an effective performance management system. This system is mainly installed into an organization for managing and aligning the tasks and activities of the organization to achieve the overall organizational mission and goals. It is performance that provides basis for an organization in getting success or failure (Martin et.al, 1998, p.223).

Discussion

All the modern organizations are using performance appraisals in order to keep an eye over the organizational performance. Some of the most commonly known applications of performance appraisal are promotions, performance improvement, test validation, termination and many more (Sudarsan et.al, 2009, p.54). There are many benefits of performance appraisal management as it helps an organization in overcoming the performance issues. Managing performance appraisal helps in facilitating employee management communication but at the same time it holds strict legal issues if it is not conducted in appropriate way. There are many employees who are not satisfied with the performance appraisal process as they feel threatened by it. It is very beneficial for an organization, as the distribution of incentives and benefits among the employees would not be possible without it.

Employees can prove themselves as the best resource if they are able to achieve the given benchmark and by this they will be able to get the appropriate proportion of the benefits and rewards. This gives them more satisfaction and motivation to give their performance in order to get more and more benefits. The chances of biasness are there but still one cannot straight forwardly say that it is not beneficial for an organization. Performance management is one of the most important functions of human resource management (Cawleyet.al, 1998, p.615). Overall performance of an organization can be evaluated in a better way by using the performance management systems.
