Art therapy

Introduction

A local university known for its established counseling program wishes to initiate an undergraduate program in art therapy. The university, however, does not have an art department. An accredited art college that does not have a counseling department is located in the same area. The two institutions wish to collaborate to offer a joint art therapy program, an offering that has been targeted as a need area in the state. Art therapy is a type of art therapy (or innovative therapy), which involves the use of the artistic process for therapeutic purposes. It is based on the idea that psychological conflicts and concerns can be worked by the patient through artistic production. It can be implemented with different types of artistic disciplines (music, art, theater, dance), according to the therapeutic situation one is facing.

Art therapy has a wide range of application in areas such as rehabilitation, education and mental health. In this paper, certain aspects that need to be covered before the collaboration starts, will be analyzed. The roles and functions of campus constituencies in developing the program proposal will be detailed. Moreover, we will discuss how campus units from both institutions might interact with each other to develop an optimal program, providing specific examples. The development of a plan to implement the program, involving all campus units and what happens to a program if each unit is not included in the program's development, will also be discussed. In the end, the paper will be concluded with an analysis of the benefits and challenges to campus collaboration in the new program development.
