Local Area Network

Introduction

Nowadays, with the rapid development of information and computer technology information serves as one of the most important products. The success of the commercial and business activities related to banking, municipal, banking information system, whose work is based on a local area network (LAN). The past decade has seen the rapid development of network systems. Networks provide the most efficient way in the price for the use of computer technology - a collective. By combining relatively low cost cables existing servers, computers, printers, modems, you get to reduce downtime of expensive equipment to a minimum, saving a substantial amount of his purchase and maintain. In its original form LANs (Local Area Network - LAN) represented nothing less than a coaxial cable from the server to the desktop terminals, users who work exclusively with text information to be displayed on a monochrome monitor with a low resolution (Spurgeon, 2008). Fundamentally new types of software also contributed to the disclosure of shortcomings of existing networks. Software requirements for network performance parameters different from those that was able to provide the network. This paper focuses on presenting a plan for the development of an Ethernet Local Area Network for a clients business.

Discussion

Building a network

Organization Structure

Number of employees in the company in the range of 50 to 500.

Plans to move to a new office or upgrading an existing network.

Formulation of a problem

The company plans to upgrade or build from the ground network. Following options have been considered:

Building a wireless network.

Building a mesh network, some segments of which will be wired, and some - wireless.

The network must meet the growing needs of the business: easy to scale as the number of jobs and support mechanisms to ensure quality of service (for possible use ip-telephony), to be safe and productive.

Network Requirements

Access to the servers should be at speeds up to 10 Gb/s. Wired network users should have access to its resources at a rate of 1 Gbit/s (Spurgeon, 2008). Wireless users to provide bandwidth of 54 Mbit/s. Wired and wireless network to be managed centrally. Data transmission over a wireless network should be safe.

The equipment used

Factors influencing the choice of the model:

The total number of Internet users.

To what level of the network hierarchy equipment will be used (core, distribution layer, the level of access.

What data rate should provide equipment?

Do you plan to use the Power over Ethernet (PoE), to supply power to the network for wireless access points and IP-phones (Merritt, 2010).
