Introduction

This assignment reviews four pieces of research papers about empowerment towards people with mental health. The assignment will focus on choice and control of the care the author under took on the service user. According to Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC, 2009), to maintain confidentiality the person's identity has been changed to Ann. Ann is a 43 year old woman who has a history of depression and recently attempted suicide. She is a divorced and lives with her two children and her mother died six months ago.

Due to the effectiveness of electronic search and availability of finding supporting research articles with current evidence regarding empowerment of choice and control of people with mental health, electronic search was used. Through electronic search engines and databases of PSYC INFO, CINAHL, PUBMED and the COCHRANE electronic databases helped to gather material relevant to the topic. The key words used were Empowerment, Choice, Control and Mental Health. The websites of specific Journals were used such as British Journal of Psychiatry and Journal of Mental Health. Boolean operators were used to narrow the results and this made the author to focus on the parameters of the years between 2002 and 2010.

Clark (2000) describes empowerment as a situation where people are given meaningful choice and valuable options to gain greater control of their lives and circumstances. The value of choice and control has been used in this assignment to critically analyze what empowerment means and also to identify health dilemmas preventing people with mental health from exercising their rights as citizens. The plans of ways in which dilemmas could be effectively engaged are also highlighted to enable people with mental health to take full control of their lives as individuals. Conclusion reflects on what is learnt for a better future practice as a nurse practitioner.

According to Rappaport (1981) empowerment is a concept born out of community psychology and preventative model. It priorities the participation of the individual in any intervention affecting his/ her welfare or it is a process of recognizing, promoting and enhancing people's rights to control their own circumstances through mobilizing of necessary resources.

Hypothesis is that people are empowered by having right of choice and taking control of their lives. The four papers are as follows:

Quest for client autonomy in improving long-term mental health care by Tineke Broer, Anna P. Nieboer and Roland A. Bal

Mental Health as Rational Autonomy by Rem B. Edwards

Empowerment and mental health in community: narratives of Psychiatric consumer survivors, by Nelson, Lord and Ochocka.

Opportunities and barriers to empowering people with severe mental illness through participation in Treatment Planning. By Donald et el.

Choice Theory

The choice theory, new psychology of personal freedom, created by Dr. William Glasser, teaches us why and how we behave, two important reasons, one is internal motivation leads us to behave in some way and the other is the ability to choose what to do.

We have choices and can make choices in different situations. Some of them are good, but we cannot ...
