Discussion on Literary Theory

Saussure has always separated language from the act of speaking. If I begin my explanation on the basis of Saussure, I will add on his precious views. Language is something that resides within oneself. People accept it whether they understand or not. The apprehension to understand unknown language, a person then starts to think over and formulate his strategy. People do not sit and make a pro-active plan to react to someone's language, but they do spend time on selecting the right words to speak. The person's intellect is reflected through his speaking power. It depends on the person how he utilizes language as a tool to communicate his thoughts. It is a person's cognitive competency how he makes up a mixture of language and speaking. Speaking is the mean with which you express your thoughts by using appropriate language (Bertens, 2012).

Culler endorses the approach of Saussure who separated language form speaking. Structuralism is the study that studies factors that form larger relationships of human beings in groups and encourage feeling, behaving and thinking in a certain manner. Structuralism is hard to understand and achieve without the study of language and speaking. Since the latter two tools communicate and develop relationships in the society. The expression for feelings, perceptions, doing and thinking gets shaped with the correct gesture of speaking and so the language. Yet, the two things are never same. It is more like one encouraging the other to take place. If we skip the role of speaking then language alone does not make an impact on structuring the relationships (Rivkin & Ryan, 2004).
