Literary Review

After performing research on results of healthy breakfast on school performance, we further studied and found that there are other people who questioned the same subject and performed their own research. Based on their findings, we will discuss and prove that having breakfast before going to school does indeed helps boost the performance of the student.

According to Hoyland et.al. (2009), breakfast is associated with a healthier lifestyle and improves cognitive abilities as well as academic performance in children. Their evidence is based on the study of 41 papers that were published from 1950 till 2008 and the result was that breakfast intake is more beneficial than skipping it altogether. However, during 1965 to 1991, the percentage of children skipping their breakfast rose from 14% to 25%. In their research, they found out that in the breakfast vs. no breakfast group, some positive benefits were seen especially in later morning when attention span decreases. They also found that when given different variety of breakfasts, they observed little to conclude that it produced notable effect.

In their conclusion, they reported that although a lot of studies were done and many claims were advertised by the media and government, the quality of all research was not up to the mark. It lacked the proper scientific grounds for concluding a study such as negative bias rates were questionable when checking food diaries for breakfast study, there were assumptions end of the year reports reflected their breakfast intake patterns, and whether physiological functions improved due to proper nutrient provision. Overall, there is a general improvement in cognitive abilities when compared to those who do not receive breakfast (Hoyland et.al. 2009).
