In Moore's outstanding first novel "Alligator" begins with a series of closely related, focused chapters, as the novel progresses, the relationship between characters and events to tighten. Collin, the Newfoundland adolescents who have grown up quickly after the death of her beloved stepfather, was convicted of ecovandalism. Instead of holding the necessary public works, she flees to Louisiana to meet Loyola, the alligator best man at one of her aunt Madeleine films. Meanwhile, Madeleine is racing to finish his film even more, knowing it would soon die. Beverly, Colleen mother and sister Madeleine, trying to cope with the death of her husband and to understand the changes in her daughter. After struggling actress Isobel, who stars in the final work of Madeleine's aunt, Russian immigrants and sociopath Valentin, who burns down the house Isobel for insurance money, and Frank, hot dog vendors and future fans of Colleen. Moore's novel, set in St. John's, Newfoundland, is a microcosm of time and carefully place featuring nuances of characters who quickly get the reader sympathy and horror, as their past and future to unravel. She received the prize in a regional Commonwealth Writers' Prize.

Stringing words together has never been a problem for Moore, as evidenced by her excellent short story collections, debut Degrees nakedness and openly (and previous Giller Prize finalists).
