Initial Evaluation

The first article discusses the overall impact of Cameron's decision to impose fiscal restrictions on EU countries and the level of hatred that his followers had for him a result of his actions. This article does not position the reader in a comprehensive manner since the viewpoints of different people are put together. Since this article entails argument, it needs to have the other side of the story as well (Bagley, 2012).

The second article discusses the impact of inefficient decisions made by Cameron as a way to create an environment of budgetary discipline. This article positions the reader well by relating the past decisions of Cameron with his current decisions. By providing both sides of the story, the reader is able to gauge the essence of the event (Grice, 2012).

Selection of Register Variables

This step is quite significant for the purpose of getting our linguistic analysis into as it involves the selection of register variables that would aid in the detailed linguistic analysis. For the purpose of critically analyzing these articles, we would look to use two types of register variables such as formal and consultative (Matthes, & Kohring, 2008, pp. 258-279).

Formal Register

Since one of the articles involves technical vocabulary and one way participation, there would be no register other than the formal register suited to this analysis. In other words, the use of a formal register would greatly assist us in accomplishing the detailed linguistic analysis. There has been no interruption in one of the articles and only involve the view points of different people with regards to the actions taken by Cameron and thus this register variable seems to be a significant factor in shaping our linguistic analysis of the articles.

Consultative Register

Secondly we would also look to use the concept of consultative register variable as it suits the situation discussed in the articles. Since the consultative register variable involves two way participation, we are tempted to use the concept of consultative register variable as a means to give a transparent look to our linguistic analysis. In addition, since background information is provided in the context of consultative register variable, it tends to provide useful insights for the purpose of our linguistic analysis. Thus, we would look to use these two register variables since they seem to be highly relevant with the nature of the articles. The essence of consultative register variable lies in the fact that prior knowledge is not assumed and thus these two register variables would point the major points of distinction among the articles.
