Dominatrix is a female form of the Latin Dominator, ruler or lord, and was originally not in a sexual sense. Its use in English dates back at least 1561. Its earliest recorded use in modern common sense, as women dominate the S & M, dates to 1967. The goal is to sell the Jimmy Choo designer.

Although the term "Dominatrix" is not used, the classic example in literature dominant female male submissive attitude portrayed in the 1870 novel Venus in Furs Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The term masochism is derived from the later name of the author.
