A library technician is an individual who has gained the necessary skills and qualification to handle the day to day, operational tasks of a library. They are generally found to be operating a computer in the library premises (Kao, 2001).

Emergence of the Profession

The role of Library Technicians emerged in both the United States and North America in the 1960s. In the beginning, the programs were shorter and less diverse. However, now a library technician typically goes through a four-year program. According to statistics, library technicians will have better employment opportunities. The growth is expected by around 10 percent in the coming year. There is a lot of turnover in libraries, which means more specialized technicians can fill those spots. Every year, there is an increased need for library technicians as people leave the job for other positions where they are offered higher pay and/or full-time work. Using the latest information technologies, their goal is to bring people together, information and materials and meet the challenges of a constantly changing information environment. Library technicians work in environments as diverse as business corporations, professional firms, financial institutions, cultural organizations, public libraries and schools.

Educational Requirements
