Telemetry Unit with High Acuity Patients

Dear Editor,

The growing inability of hospital staff in tackling health issues have a great validity that needs to be addressed. Unavailability of nursing staff in telemetry unit is a critical issue, which should be resolved with utmost concentration. Telemetry unit is a very critical and important unit in the health care settings (www.fda.gov). Patients who need continuous electronic monitoring are admitted to it. Telemetry is a very successful tool, which is used in the hospital and health care settings to send electronic signals. This tool allows health care professionals to monitor heart beat, breathing and other bodily functions. It is very important to have sufficient amount of staff members to deliver quality health care.

Since, I am working as a registered nurse in the respective department that is the reason why I feel that there should be enough nursing staff to face any unusual condition. In the telemetry unit, I haven't seen more than 6 to 7 nurses working and delivering health care at night. I think that there should be some legislation that ensures the urge of safe staffing. Any legislation on this issue will help us to ensure better and safer health for the patients. Moreover, the formation of these legislations will also enable other nurses to spend less time at the computer and more time in the delivery of health care.

Increased staffing in telemetry unit is extremely necessary because of number of reasons. Insufficiency of nursing staff is very common with a number of adverse effects. It has been evaluated through large number of studies that there is a strong relationship between poor patient results and unit nurse staffing. Studies have shown that insufficient nursing staff results in at least one adverse effect in the patient. There are about ...
