Basic Life Support (BLS) Course is one of the mandatory courses offered by the Training and Staff Development Department. This course addresses CPR in Adult, Child, Infant and the use of Crash Cart in emergency situations. The course is delivered on monthly bases in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia and ICU. The aim of this course is to equip the multiprofessional staff of Khoula Hospital with the essential basic skills of resuscitating patients/clients in their different categories.
Gagne (1977, 1985) presented an instructional theory. In his theory, Gagne calls the type of performance expected of a learner as a result of instruction a learning outcome. Based on his theory, one must identify the learning outcomes first, and then seek the best methods that bring about such outcomes. Thus, the Gagne's theory of instructional design can be categorized as a prescriptive theory. My lesson plan will be focusing on the Infant CPR which is one of the main lessons to be addressed in the 5 hours BLS provider course. I will be using Gagne's nine event of instructional design as a framework for my lesson plan (Gagne, Briggs & Wagner, 1992).
Gaining attention (reception):
I chose the projection of images and statistics of Infants death due to cardio- pulmonary arrests/conditions. Also as part of driving the participants' attention to the lesson, I write the ABCD's of infant CPR on the flip chart. This will stimulate both the attention and thought process of the participants to the lesson and alert them to what to come next. By starting the session with gaining the attention of the student, it gives each student a reason to be attentive and to participate during the teaching (Belfield (2010). Informing learners of the objective (expectant):
A page explaining the learning outcomes of the infant CPR will be provided as a supplement along with the BLS manual when participants come to register for the course. On the day of the course, a short power point presentation will be given to inform participants about the learning outcomes of the lesson stating what is expected from them at the end of this session. A clear objective, goal or image of the desired outcomes enhances learning. Moreover, it helps in building on our capability for forethought, providing a guidepost for monitoring and directing our progress appropriately. Awareness of the goal, also increases expenditure of energy, effort and stimulates the development of strategies to reach the goal (Swanwick, 2011).
At this stage, I will start establishing the participant-teacher relationship by informing the participants that, this lesson is an opportunity for them to develop new skills and efforts will be made to help them gain confidence in performing the taught skill. Having such a relationship will encourage participants to ask questions and clarify their doubts and help me as a teacher in helping them in mastering the skill taught.
Stimulating recall of prior learning (retrieval)
All learners will have prior experience, knowledge, different interests and motivation and expectations. These should be taken into consideration when planning ...
