Introduction

Dylan Thomas, in “A Child's Christmas in Wales” writes from the child in himself to the child in us, without disturbing the skeptical adult selves that stand sentry over precious childhood memories (Dupuy, 2004). He re-creates the intense colors, the distinctive odors, the absolutely human feel of everything we registered in our crustless youths.

Style of Text

“A Child's Christmas in Wales” written by Dylan Thomas in 1952 is a prose which originally emerged from the poetic piece written by Thomas for radio. The writing style of the piece shows that it is a prose. It is an anecdotal retelling of Christmas festival from the point of view of a child. The child is romanticized with the Christmas of pasts which portrays a simpler and nostalgic time.

This story is one of the most popular works of the author. The story does not have a definite narrative structure; however, it ha many descriptive passages that are designed to built an sensitive longing. The young boy in the story is recounting the festive season of Christmas in a fiction form of autobiographical style (Stonehill, 1985). There many instances that show that it is a prose, for example, the first descriptive passage where Thomas is searching for a nostalgic western belief in Christmas and say, It was snowing. It was always snowing at Christmas.

The author has moved the idyllic memory of child by illustrating the snow as being more exciting and netter than the snow one experiences in its adulthood. The prose is presented with exaggerated characters that are either used to give the comedic effects to the prose or to show that the childhood experiences and memories are often enlarged due to the childish analysis (Dupuy, 2004).

Response to the Story

Every person in the world possesses own childhood memories that are the sweetest and most cherished part of their lives. It gives strength to play the left out innings of the game.
