The original issue which was under discussion in the paper is related to the legalization of Marijuana. Several criminal activities have been associated with the use of marijuana in different countries of the world including United States. Consumption of marijuana leads to several crimes which include illegal trafficking, theft, robbery and other organized crimes which harm the society. However if Marijuana is legalized then there are several repercussions which are needed to be dealt with which include increase in the rate of consumption which would eventually increase the health care costs of the government along with that rehabilitation costs will also be increased at the same time because the consumers or marijuana suffer from serious psychological disorders which affect the society because of their consumption. In United States a program was launched by the name of war on drugs which ensured that consumers of any of the drugs should be imprisoned immediately.

The term war on drugs was first used by Richard Nixon in 1971. Under the leadership of the Nixon, users of psychoactive substances are labeled as the people who lacked 'good characters and they should be largely blamed for the social ills related to drug use. However, despite the intensive political repression of the substance use, there was no significant reduction in the consumption has been noticed. In 1977, Jimmy Carter declared to Congress that the possession of small amounts of marijuana should not be penalized. Despite statements like this, U.S. policy has since taken steps widely controversial to stop the advance of the use and trafficking of psychoactive substances.
