Learning Disabled Children

Thesis Statement

“Learning disabled children are unique not because of their disability but because of their distinctive needs. Teachers should understand their requirements in order to device an appropriate instructional program and caretakers, especially mothers, should know their needs to make them acceptable for people at public places.”

Introduction

Quantity of children having learning disabilities is increased during last few years. In order to overcome their problems, research regarding the techniques to teach them and to increase their development skills more effectively has also gained momentum. An efficient and effective reading program needs to address the needs of individuals having learning disabilities along with the implementation of basic techniques to provide instructions. The task to teach reading and learning to these kinds of children needs constructive strategies which must include tasks for reading in order to achieve success. On the other it is also needed that mothers should do efforts to make them acceptable for society according to the social arrangements rather than making them mainstream children.

Many conducted research shows that there are various kinds of instructional approaches to enable reading skills in children with disabilities but the most successful techniques are said to be direct instruction and whole-language instruction (Wright and Jacobs 2003).In whole-language instruction technique, fulfilled kinds of texts are used to teach them such as novels and stories. Students use these completed texts to learn and read with the help of instructions given by teachers (Martin et al. 2008). On the other hand direct instructions is a complete teacher centered technique in which teachers make categories of students according to their learning needs in different levels and then teach them particular skills based on their existing abilities (Carlson and Francis 2202). Alike whole language instructions, students in direct instructions also use full texts to learn but these texts are designed to strengthen the skills they already have or the ones they were taught before.

Needs of children with learning disabilities are quite unique than other children. Children who have learning disabilities have to struggle continuously for accomplishing reading and learning tasks. Due to their inabilities they often feel ashamed and frustrated among their peers and teachers. Many evidences show that the children who have reading and learning disabilities not only dislike schools and studies but also fail to improve academically in their further education(Martin et al. 2008).Here is a dire need of co-operation among teachers, ...
