Learning Disability

Introduction

A learning disability can be described as the incapability in a person to learn new things in life. The learning disability has the presence of a very low ability to understand complex information with the very little capability to learn impaired intelligence or new skills. The people with this disability have difficulty in impaired social functioning and they suffer with the reduced ability to cope independently which mostly starts before the adulthood but remains with the person throughout his life. This disability has the ever lasting effects on development (Department of Health, 2001).

This term was first introduced in United Kingdom and replaced the word mental handicap with the learning disability. However, this term is not limited with the learning difficulties instead it also includes the people who have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Though, these people do have the significant general impairment (Department for Children, Schools and Families, 2009). There are around 1.5 millions of people in United Kingdom who have been suffering with this disability.

This study intends to provide an in-depth insight over the health inequalities and its leading factors in care and treating the people with the learning disabilities. There are copious factors which contribute in the poorer health concerns of these disabled people. This paper aims at providing a clearer vision into the lifelong illness of learning disability in the light of numerous research literatures and practices of various health settings in treating this disability.

The children with the learning disabilities in the UK experience the health inequalities in the numerous areas which consequently affect their health conditions that may even cause the serious health concerns throughout the life such as reduced quality of life, anti social behaviors, emotional and behavioral difficulties. The health inequalities can be reduced with the interventions of educational programmes can advantage in this concern. The study also aims at reflecting the role of social health care commissioners and support staff in helping the people with the specialized needs. The social care commissioners have been working to deal with the public health to provide them with the pool of knowledge and information in order to address the social as well as other determinants of health inequality. The information provided in this concern includes the joint strategic needs assessment which truly aims at informing and spreading the health and well being boards.

The paper also highlights the role of learning disability nurses in supporting the disabled people. The learning disability nurses intend to address the needs of people with the learning disability by improving their physical as well as mental health and help them in pursuing a normal life like the general public as the people with the learning disabilities face a great deal of health inequalities in United Kingdom.
