Athlete Eldrick Tont Woods better known as Tiger Woods, born in 1975, in Cypress California having an African American father and a Thai mother became an American professional golf player. His father Earl helped him learn the game of golf and by the age of 8, he had acquired the skills of the game. During his studies, he won many titles before he professionally entered the field. He began his professional career as a golfer in the year 1996 and at the age of 21, became the youngest man and the first African American to win the US Masters which shot him to fame. Since then, he never looked back in his career and his achievements to-date makes him being considered as the most successful golfer of all times. In the successive years, he earned many titles including US PGA titles, US Open wins, Open Championship successes and US Masters wins. There were though some personal life issues that also affected his game and image in the years later, yet he made a comeback and is currently ranked as the number 1 player in golf (www.biography.com). Tiger Woods is also credited with popularizing the sports not only among African Americans but also among children of other backgrounds.
Tiger Woods Foundation
In addition to his playing exploits, Woods is busy off the course too. Since 1996, the Tiger Woods Foundation has reached more than thousands of young people to provide them with innovative educational opportunities around the world. The idea of the development of the foundation was to provide young people with tools and opportunities that would help them achieve a better future which became a reality in the later years. The Tiger Woods Learning Centers provides hands-on experience in various subjects to create an environment that would help in deciding their career and college. Once these young kids are ready for college, they are provided with college scholarships, mentors, internships and workshops to bring reality to their dreams of going to college and excelling in their field thereby helping them in their life after college.
Apart from these programs, the Foundation with the help of its sponsors runs AT &T National, World Challenge, Tiger Woods Invitational, Tiger Jam and the Deutsche Bank Championship. The proceeds of these events benefit the Foundation and ultimately the thousands of children that the Foundation supports in terms of education. Tiger Woods, who has won 5 of the World Challenge events, donates his winnings to his Foundation.
