Introduction

The Environmental Protection Agency (specifically, the United States Environmental Protection Agency or EPA, "Agency for environmental protection in the United States") is an independent agency of the U.S. government. It established in 2 December 1970, to study and protect nature and the health of citizens of the United States.

Its mission is "to protect human health and safeguard the natural elements - air, land and water - essential to life.”

Activities

The agency develops and enforces regulations on the environment, managing the budget allocations that support environmental programs, conducts research on environmental issues and inform the American public. The Office of International Affairs, EPA is responsible for efforts for reducing pollution transnational. It also encourages the ethical governance of international environmental policy.

The Agency's water quality monitoring involves coordinated activities to restore water resources. The function of this program are to develop federal programs, technical policies, management measures for pollution control and water supply, development of water quality standards and guidelines in this area (Weick, 2009).

Legislative framework

The legal basis of the Agency is following a set of laws:

Act 1899 on waste production - the first federal law prohibiting the pollution of the environment, but only came into force in 1970, when the Nixon administration ordered the Justice Department to require companies to obtain a permit for dumping.

Act 1965 of the planning of water resources. This law imposed national standards for air quality and emissions for stationary sources of air pollution, as well as for vehicles. The law obliged each state to submit plans to ensure compliance with national air quality standards or, if their failure, ordered the states to perform lowered their plans. In accordance with the law, the Council formed by water and river basin commissions.
