Summary

The paper discovers Japanese followers' authority preferences and considers the suitability of Bass and Avolio's (1997) full-range authority form in Japan. Claimed as being universal (Bass 1996) this form was evolved in a North American context and has obtained little study vigilance elsewhere. A qualitative approach was engaged, encompassing template investigation and some content analyses.

Data assemblage is split up into two phases: Phase 1 undertook by semi-structured meetings and Phase 2 with questionnaires. Results propose the unsuitability of Bass and Avolio's (1997) full-range authority form in a Japanese context, show the influence of heritage alterations in Japan, and recognise Liberal, Trust, Punctual, Network, Protective, and After-five as Japanese culture-specific favoured authority styles. Findings propose that, in a Japanese context, not only the new authority approach of Bass and Avolio's (1997) form, but furthermore the customary approach of House's (1971) path-goal idea are of value. The study presents insight to living ideas and authority perspectives in Japan, and boasts guidance for managers who deal with Japanese followers by recognising authority methods inside Bass and Avolio's form, and Japanese culture-specific authority methods which are especially favoured by Japanese followers

This study thus aspires to discover the environment of follower's authority preferences in Japan and in doing so, considers the applicability of Bass and Avolio's (1997) full-range authority form to Japan, as well as contemplating if any heritage exact facets of authority can be identified. Cultural alterations which have been happening in Japan are furthermore advised, to analyze the expected influence this has upon authority preferences.
