Introduction

Leadership plays an important role for business success. There is a need of a strong leadership that establishes a healthy working environment in the organization. Leadership skills are also necessary to develop a healthy workplace at where current and future employees need proper guidance and monitoring (McGovern, 2013). She joined the American Red Cross as a President and CEO in 2008. Under her dynamic leadership direction, Red Cross has eliminated operating deficit in 2009 and delivered a modest surplus over past three years, and the organization continues to pay down its debt. She has initiated extensive modernization projects at Red Cross, including overhaul its Information technology system, expansion of health and safety instruction and organization social media growth.

First, I would like to thanks my professor who allows me a chance to discuss my favorite humanitarian leadership personality. This paper aims to discuss my favorite personality and nursing Leader, Gail J. McGovern. I will also discuss her leadership qualities that inspired me allot, and I am more willing to perform these leadership skills in my professional career.

Brief overview of the person's biography

Born in year 1952, Gail J. McGovern is an American Philanthropist who joined the American Red cross as a President and Chief Executive Office on April 2008 (redcross.org, 2013). In year 2000, McGovern recognized for the fortune magazine in 2000 as one of 50 most influential women in American corporate sector. In year 2003, she joined Weather Company as a board of Directors and other services.

She received her M.A degree in the Quantitative science from University of Johns Hopkins and Master of Business Administration from Columbia University (leadership18.org, 2013).

McGovern starts her career as a programmer at AT&T Corporation and spent 3 years in sales and marketing field. She gradually becomes an executive Vice President of the consumer market division. In year 2002, McGovern became a lecturer and joined the faculty of Harvard Business School where she shares her field experience of consumer marketing (leadership18.org, 2013).

Leadership Style of McGovern

She is an effective leader with having distinct set of personal qualities such as Integrity, Initiative, Courage and Ability to Handle Stress (McGovern & Quelch, 2005). She often admired her efforts to think critically in setting goals, collaboration and skillful communication. According to McGovern, in today's working environment of the healthcare, it is a time to develop creative leadership and that why she creatively involved in decision making with patience.

McGovern believes that an effective leader is a role model for her team members, and it is the best way to expect more from team members. According to her, “I am humbled and inspired by incredible humanitarian network of the thousand volunteers, supporters and workers who serves their neighbor in different communities across United States. I also look forward to them for long term growth and Red Cross success as mission of life saving” (thenonprofittimes, 2013).
