Strategies and Models for Managing Capacity and Demand in Healthcare

Capacity and demand is considered as one of the biggest challenges during the service improvement in healthcare settings (Hall, 2006, pp.nd). National health services in United Kingdom have certain strategies and models that will be beneficial for the management of capacity and demand. Demand refers to the desire of consumers in any context (Jones & Mitchell, 2006, pp.nd). Demand in healthcare settings refers to the desire, willingness, and ability of a patient to believe in the process of treatment. Capacity, in general terms, refers to the storage or accommodation (Akcali, Coˆté & Lin, 2006, pp. 391-404). Capacity in healthcare describes the adjustment of fixtures, staff, or other accommodation in the hospital. National health services have mentioned various strategies that will help the organisation to overcome the challenge of demand and capacity (Burkle, 2006, pp. 1118-1129). Reduction of inappropriate or unnecessary demand for a service in healthcare settings can be considered as a major strategy for demand management. Reduction of variation in a demand is another beneficial strategy that will be helpful for the organisation (Hick, Barbera & Kelen, 2009, pp. 59 - 67). Various studies have suggested that Gibbs model will make a direct impact over the demand and capacity management (Gupta & Denton, 2008, pp. 800-819). Gibbs model consists of six stages, and each stage will surely help the organisation to resolve the issue of demand and capacity. Evaluation and analysis stages of Gibbs model play a major role to resolve any issue (Davies & Elwyn, 2006, p.844). Evaluation of the problem and analysis of evidence based literature will surely help the organisation to formulate a strong network for demand and capacity management. National medical services described that the examination and assessment of fixtures, equipments, and staffing will overcome the problem of capacity (Ozcan, 2005, pp. nd). Moreover, maintenance of a strict referral validation process is another major strategy for demand and capacity management. Furthermore, converger stage of Kolb's model may help the organisation to manage supply and demand (Coughlin, Pope & ...
