A person should have confidence in himself, his superiors ? associates ? subordinates. It is also crucial to give and receive feedback at all times. Respect and trust does not come with position; but is earned. (Robert and Valesky 2006)
Lead by example
If the leaders appearance ? conduct and performance are outstanding ? team members will view the leader with respect ? pride and a desire to match the quality standards. Subordinates look up to the leader to set examples ?(Robert and Valesky 2006) which they may follow. The following could be used as guidelines for foster quality standards:
One should be alert ? cheerful ? interested ? well groomed and correctly dressed
One should control emotions. Outbursts of anger or fits of depression will not win respect.
One should be calm ? confident and optimistic.
One should show self-discipline.
One should exercise initiative ? and encourage this in subordinates (Robert and Valesky 2006)
One should show team loyalty - you are intimately responsible for all actions of your subordinates. Also avoid favorites.
Know your subordinates and students ? and look after them
When a team member knows you are looking out for them ? they will have a better attitude towards the team and towards you. One should be friendly and approachable; should be fair and firm in delegation and disciplinary decisions. And he/she should share privileges and rewards. (Robert and Valesky 2006)
Develop the qualities of leadership in your followers
Delegating authority to one's subordinates; a person will not only develop your own future leaders ? but you will also show that you trust them to make decisions as well as trust their opinions and input.
