To begin to understand the establishment of tort laws that have been an important part of English Law, it is necessary to understand exactly what the reputation of tort is is and what does it imply. Tort is defined as a tool to highlight and identify an act or display, which is illegal, unethical or causes unneeded harm to another person involved in the act (Afoaku, 2001).

Defining Torts and Tort Laws

The legal dictionary (2011) defines Tort law as "A body of rights, obligations, and remedies that are applied by courts in civil proceedings to provide relief for persons who have suffered harm from the wrongful acts of others." Derived from the Latin word tortus, which means twisted, Tort, in common jurisdiction is defined as a wrong that involves a breach of a civil duty owed to someone else. It is separate from criminal attempts, which involves a violation of duty to society. Some of the wrongs covered under tort law include either physical or psychological distress, damage to quality of life, incapacitation to earn a living, loss of companionship, medical expenses and attorney costs. The losses covered can be present or projected in the future. The law of torts derived from a combination of common-law principles and legislative enactments, and is normally found in regional, state, and national civil codes where the limits on damages and the statute of limitations for tort cases are detailed. The law of torts classified into three core classes: intended torts, negligent torts and strict liability torts (Afoaku, 2001).
