Disposal of wastes generated in the Lakeland Planning Area occurs in various ways. The area's primary method is to haul wastes which are not recycled to major Lakeland Landfill. Such areas are owned and mostly operated by Polk County Environmental Services Division. Explosive refuse like wood are sent to special facilities located just next to County's Lakeland Landfill for the waste-to-energy conversion (Romig, 1986).
