Gibbs Model of Reflection

I have chosen an assumed example related to nursing management. Example is related to the problems faced by a nurse when she for the first time handed her patient over to another nurse using the Gibbs model of reflection.

Description

Nurse A was placed in the children's ward for her final placement of the course. This required her to monitor patients independently but in a supervised environment. A 14 year old boy was placed under her supervision who had been admitted with severe malaria.

Feelings

Nurse A was designated to take care of the boy during the day shift. But when the next shift started her supervisor out of the blue asked her to give the nursing handover for which she was not prepared.

Evaluation

She started with the basic information of the patient like name, age and reason for admission. After that she got confused and was not able to carry on further. Looking at this her supervisor took over the patient handover.

Analysis

Nurse A was clearly not ready to plan a patient handover and to deliver one to the next nurse.

Conclusion

To overcome this problem she started making notes as what information is to be provided to the next nurse. She made a list of the essential information so that nothing is forgotten.

Action Plan

In case of further problem ever encountered in the patient handover to another nurse, Nurse A can consult various nursing journals and plan out the handover.

Critical Evaluation

The statement “all knowledge reflects the identity characteristics, personal values, historical and cultural experiences of the person who created it” holds true as mentioned in many research journals and articles.

The term reflexivity is defined on the idea “knowledge cannot be separated from the knower”. The authors (Thorpe & Holt, 2008, p. 184) say that our presence in the qualitative research will have some effect on the knowledge that we produce. Researchers typically work in teams, and it is very much possible that the researcher may incorporate the behavior of the group towards any topic in the research rather than giving the real image. This was related to the behavior of the researcher towards the research. Another dimension that supports our statement can be seen in the methodology implied to carry out the research. Researcher would always choose the method in which he is skilled. The researcher may say that the acceptable standards for doing a research have been followed whereas he may ...
