Introduction

Kelham Island is a designated quarter and is one of the eleven designates quarters of Sheffield. The island was formerly an industrial area which was created by a building of the mill race or a goit. The island was fed using the water from River Don. This water was used to move the wheels which were used to supply power to the workshops of the industrial part of the island. The Kelham Island quarter is diamond shaped. It is a metropolitan borough and an industrial area. Kelham Island is located in the South Yorkshire, a part of England. According to the Census of 2001, the population of the district was 513,000. Iron smelting was the chief industry of the area in the twelfth century (1992). It was subsequently replaced by Sheffield silverware, cutlery and plate in the 14th century. The industrial revolution helped in developing the steel and iron industry at a rapid pace. The district now produces special steel and alloys, permanent magnets, cutlery of all kinds, precision tools and drills. Other industries include the manufacture of optical glass, type-founding and electroplating. The Kelham Quarter is bordered in the south west by Gibraltar Street and Shalesmoor. To the north east, it is bound by the Harvest Lane, Neepsend Lane and the Mowbray Street. Towards the North West, Ball Street and Cornish Street bound it. Kelham Island Museum

The Kelham Island Museum is located on the Alma Street. It is an industrial museum and is located on the river side of the River Don. It is in centre of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. The museum was opened for public in 1982. The museum is famous for the exhibitions on industry of Sheffield and science. The museum also has a vast photographic area. This is used by the authors to illustrate the local books of history. During the flood that hit Sheffield in 2007, the museum was badly hit. Later, the museum was repaired and is now open to public again. Kelham Island museum is located next to Fat Cat. Fat Cat is one of the two public houses that the Kelham Island Brewery own (www.imeche.org).
