The beloved Polish director was at the heights of his career, in the 1950's, when the wounds of WWII were fresh in Poland. Andrzej Wajda produced the finest film of his career named Kanal In 1957.

Kanal was the first film that was ever made about the revolution of Warsaw, which told the story of a worn out Company of the Home Army struggling fighters who were trying escape the onslaught of the Nazi's throughout the sewerage system of the city. (Wajda, Marek, 2007)
