The Step by Step Juvenile Justice Process followed in the State of Georgia is as follows.

INTAKE

In Georgia, first step in juvenile justice system is intake process that involves the court service system of DJJ (Department of Juvenile Justice) as well as the juvenile court system. During the course of intake process, a JPPS can: adjust the case informally, begin adjudicatory proceedings by filing a petition with the juvenile court, divert the case to external services (outside the court services), or recommend to dismiss the case.

CUSTODY

After following intake process, law enforcement officials will take Xander into custody and notify legal guardians (Xander's mother) about his detainment. After detaining Xander, a validated instrument will then be utilized by completing an assessment of the risk of failure to appear in the court hearing or potential risk tore-offend to determine detention or immediate release. Finally, arrangements will be made either to release Xander or transport him to RYDC (Regional Youth Detention Center) if Xander is being detained securely or an alternative placement such as shelter.

PROBABLE CAUSE HEARING

Within 48 hours or 2880 minutes of Xander's detention at RYDC, a probable or likely cause hearing will be held. In the hearing, a judge of Juvenile court will review the findings submitted y IO's (Intake officer investigation and determines whether to further detain Xander or grant him bail.

ADJUDICATORY HEARING

In the adjudicatory hearing, court will determine the validity of the allegations against Xander which are outlined in petition. Case may be dismissed if allegations are determined as invalid or false.

DISPOSITIONAL HEARING

After Xander's adjudicatory hearing, dispositional hearing will be held with an aim to establish whether Xander need supervision, rehabilitation, or treatment. Additionally, dispositional hearing can immediately adjudicatory hearing or set it for a near future date.
