Introduction

In order to learn more about Judaism, I conducted an interview with a person at the Jewish Center at the UNC Chapelhill Campus. The interview was conducted over the phone and several calls were made over a couple of days since it was difficult to get him free for a longer period. The result of the interview was quite positive as I gained a lot of information about the Jewish tradition and many of my queries were answered promptly.

Interview

I first called this persona day earlier before the interview in order to take an appointment so that he would be free to give me some of his time. I was asked to call the next morning at 10 but since he was expecting a busy schedule, I would only have a few minutes; however, he agreed to give me additional time later on. My first impression about this person was that he would give me his time and provide me with all the information I need.

The next day, I called at the given time and the person was delighted to hear from me and after greeting him, I then proceeded to ask the questions that I had prepared in advance.

Q. When did you decide to spend your life preaching in Jewish centers?

A. I decided this at a late stage of my life, my parents always wanted at least one of their children to devote their lives to teaching the Jewish culture, as I noticed that neither of my brothers were interested, I decided to take up this challenge. I eventually began to get more involved in Jewish practices and studies. One of my friends helped me a lot in accomplishing this task. I spent eight years studying before I was fluent enough to share my knowledge with others for the promotion of Jewish culture.

Q. How did you end up at the UNC Chapelhill Campus?

A. Although I never expected to be here, a series of events in my life brought me here. After spending several years studying the Jewish culture and tradition, I began searching for a job everywhere but was unsuccessful. Eventually, one day I met an old friend whom I haven't seen since several years. He told me to apply here as a teacher since they needed some. I eventually got hired as a teacher and slowly made my way to the Jewish center where I spend my spare time after classes end.

Q. Since you have been associated with the Jewish center since quite some time, what do you think are the main objectives of the center?

A. The Jewish center at the UNC Chapelhill Campus is dedicated to provide services and programs to the students in order to foster a positive Jewish identity. The center is open to Jewish students as well as those who wish to explore the experience of Jewish culture that incorporate and reflect Jewish observances and ethics.
