This free agency is really confusing. I understand that the Redskins have approached the free agency market by parting ways with under achievers Fred Smoot, Antwan Randle El, Ladell Betts, and Rock Cartwright. This definitely freed up some much needed monies to possibly sign a veteran free agent. But why do they feel the need to possibly utilize the second round draft pick on a quarterback after the recent signing of veteran quarterback Rex Grossman and you haven't even given third year returning quarterback Colt Brennan a fair opportunity. Lets not forget second year practice player Richard Bartel who has also been acquired. Drafting a quarterback to me would be a waste of a draft pick and a slap in the face to starting quarterback Jason Campbell.
Another interesting change will be the switch from the 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. How in the world will this effect defense of end Andre Carter who is a primary pass rusher and may have to assume the role as a cover linebacker? Maybe before it's all said and done they will send him packing and use the draft pick to select a cover linebacker. Brian Orakpo appeared to have made the adjustment since his switch from a pass rusher to a cover linebacker at the start of his rookie season. This is why this free agency/off-season is so confusing to me because I can't seem to figure out what moves the Redskins will make next.
Next it will be interesting to see how the Redskins will address the secondary. Hopefully they will move Laron Landry to strong safety which is his original position because he is a terrible in coverage situations because he always get beat on double moves. Maybe we will send him packing too because Reed Doughty is a much better tackler. I wonder if the Redskins will utilize their draft pick to address the secondary since they released veteran cornerback Fred Smoot. I was really confused about his release but I didn't have a full understanding of the 3-4 defense. This particular defense will eliminate nickel package situations and requires the use of only two defense of backs. This is why this free agency/off-season is so confusing to me because I can't seem to figure out what moves the Redskins will make next.
Overall I'm pleased with Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen's approached to the off season. I think we finally have a coaching staff that has been able to convince Dan Snyder to just stay away. I really like the fact that the Redskins have stayed out of the free agency market and have not wasted money by signing a big name free agent. I also feel that the signings they have made have been very savvy. I think that fans will embrace this new era and the direction the team is headed. Hopefully this season the Redskin's games will be more rewarding and I can spend more time in the stadium while spending less time ...
