Introduction

John Dewey was born on 20 October 1859 in Burlington. He and his two brothers grew up in middle class circumstances. Both parents came from farming families, the father succeeded after the civil war but his own tobacco shop to purchase. The neighborhood was comprised of both old-timers as well as from immigrants from Ireland and Quebec.
