Introduction

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provide services in emergency which are dedicated towards out of hospital acute medical care, provision of medical transportation to the effected, injured or ill people,, which prevents the patients to use their personal transport. EMS services are provided through various organizations in a state. They generally include; government sectors, private companies, fire departments, hospitals, and flight systems. EMS providers are locally known as emergency squad, first aid providers, ambulance squads, life squad or life fighters. The aim of EMS service is to provide the needy patients with urgent satisfactory treatment of medical care, or to arrange best possible arrangement of transportation to shift the patient to a point where he can achieve definitive care (Tanigawa & Shigematsu, 2000). Modern concept of EMS includes all the facilities that provide medical aid.

EMS Service in Japan

Japan is progressing quickly in order to develop it EMS system. At present, Japan has an essentially pure scoop-and-run, defibrillation system. However, the country is making a strong statement in expanding the scope of emergency medical services by including advance life support (ALS) and trauma centers in its system. Since, Japan is technologically developed country; therefore, it can make a rapid effort to introduce an effective and rational EMS system. Fire department of Tokyo is one of the main emergency medical service providers in the country today.

Tokyo Fire Department (TFD)

Fire department of Tokyo is one of the main emergency medical service providers in the country today. The department came into being on 7th March, 1948. It has a legal status of municipal fire service. Headquarter of the department is in Otemachi, Tokyo, Japan. TFD is considered as the largest fire department of the world in urban sector. TFD provides emergency medical and rescue services to 23 wards in Tokyo from fires, earthquakes, flooding and radioactive hazards (Klinoff, 2007). The ambulances of the department are staffed by a specialized team which is trained in rescue, transport, stabilization, medical related emergency service, and advanced traumatic care. There are three levels of service in the department; First Aid Class One (FAC-1), Standard First Aid Class (SFAC), and Emergency Life Saving Technician (ELST). From the year 2010, new clothing has been assigned to the crew members in order to prevent infections and injuries.

TFD works as the main unit of rescue service providing in Tokyo. It has many important duties and services.

Fire Prevention

The sole duty of the department is to inspect buildings for the prevention of fire. It takes safety measures against hazardous materials. It also does inspection for prevention of fire. TFD educates and guides management of any building against fire protection. It also investigates the reasons and causes of fire after the incidence.

Emergency Medical Services
