Intravenous Medication Administration-Nursing Care

Introduction of the Case Study

A 48 years old female was admitted in a hospital for abdominoplasty and also suffering from asthma. Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck Surgery is one of the most common aesthetic procedures performed. This surgical procedure is done to remove the excess abdominal fat and skin that does not respond to diet and exercise. Through the surgical procedure the abdomen is flattened by removing the extra fat and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. Abdominoplaty is not similar to liposuction; however a person can opt for abdominoplasty along with tummy tuck surgery (Aly, n.d, p. 1609).

The two indications for abdominoplasty are women who had multiple pregnancies and the process can be used to tighten the abdominal muscles and removing excessive skin. For both men and women it can be sued to reduce the obese fat deposits and the loose skin that cannot be toned back to normal with diet and exercise.

Abdominoplaty is not recommended for females who plan to become pregnant in future and even if a person smokes than doctors recommend quitting smoking at least two weeks before the procedure until the recovery up till two weeks. As smoking makes further complications and also slows the healing process (Aly, n.d, p. 1609).

Following the surgery the patient feels pain and swelling and is prescribed IV medications to handle pain and control infections. The healing process may continue up to several weeks but the stay is hospital might take 1 or 2 days depending on the patient condition. The complications associated with the surgery are infection, internal bleeding and the associated co morbidities like asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders. Abdominoplasty also leave scars and they fade over time but will never completely disappear. Certain topical applications are also recommended for scar healing.

The pathophysiology which causes the abdominal deformity is due to excessive skin and subcutaneous tissue and laxity of the abdomen wall muscles. The area that usually receives the surgical intervention is around and below the umbilicus, where the diastasis of the rectus muscles is most obvious.

Pathophysiology of the Disease

Since the patient is a female 48 years and keeping in mind her history the most common cause of excessive abdominal deposition is deformity during pregnancy and most probably due to multiple pregnancies. As during pregnancy the skin is stretched beyond its biomechanical capacity and it stretches the muscle to the extent that they cannot get back to the normal physiology. The stretching and thinning of these structures cause diastasis of the rectus muscles. Another common cause of abnormal abdominal physiology is postpartum weight loss. Excessive weight loss due to dieting and even after bypass surgery plays a significant role in laxity and excess skin of the abdomen (Gabriel, 2013).

Asthma and Surgery

The patient is marked to suffer from asthma and patients who are asthmatics need special consideration pre and post-surgery. The common complications which asthma can induce during surgery are acute bronchoconstriction which ...
