IT system Planning

Information system planning is used in order to study the organization's information needs, identifying the strategic needs and developing a strong plan in order to address these information needs. The strategic system planning is mostly undertaken by the senior management of the organization and it is not undertaken as an end in itself (Levi, Amir & Uri, 1986). In order to be effective and efficient, the IT system planning project should be directed and owned by the executive of the organization and not the IT department. There are many challenges in the IT system planning.

Challenges in the Information System Planning

One of the major challenges in the information system planning is to get the support of the top management for the implementation of the plan. Similarly, the role of the team leader is very important as the success of any methodology employed depends on the team leader. If the team leader performs well then the project will be greatly successful (Levi, Amir & Uri, 1986). Furthermore, in most of the cases it also becomes difficult to find out the appropriate leader who fulfills the criteria specified in the methodology. Moreover, it is also very difficult to secure the commitment of the top management in the proper implementation of the plan.

It has been noticed that the information system planning does not provide enough and appropriate for the development of specific databases. Similarly, the Strategic information system planning fails in determining the data architecture which satisfies the needs of the organization. Furthermore, it has also been observed that the Strategic information system in an organization planning does not properly address the needs for data administration (Levi, Amir & Uri, 1986). Also, it has been observed that the documentation also does not properly define the steps that could be for the implementation of the methodology. Moreover, the methodology also most of the times do not take into account the issues which are related to the implementation of the plan. Moreover, the implementation of the data architectures and projects which are identified require the substantial amount of the analysis. It also happens that the computer lacks the effective computer support (Martin, James 1990).

The plan must also be flexible and should properly accommodate the culture of the management, its philosophy, management styles and existing investments. It is particularly important for the commitment of staff to get started with the project. The strategic system planning should also have the essential technology expertise which is very important in order to develop a strong and solid technology platform (Spewak, 1993). However, it should be kept in mind that the technology expertise does not guarantee the success. Moreover, the strategic system planning must focus on the4 quality instead of the quantity and quality should be ensured at all costs. The strategic system planning must be refreshed annually in order to ensure that the plans remain strategic and achievable. The most important challenge of the strategic system planning is that the ...
