Summary

These days, unmarried black women have become the figure of fascination. Popular books by writers including T.D. Jakes and Steve Harvey, cable news specials, newspaper articles about single black women and the films of Tyler Perry are sending the American public into deep dismay. The justification provided for this phenomenon appears to be of two types: misrepresentations of perverse and hostile black women or indecent account of the irresponsibility exhibited by black male. For the popular media, it is uncommon to inculcate thorough historical or social analyses careful social or historical analyses. Instead, this popular media is the source of reason less panic, in most of the cases.

The author interviewed approximately 100 African-American asking them about their experiences in dating and marriage; the answers which he received also guided him to bring some other questions into limelight through another research. In addition, the author also did not accept the hypothesis that it is an underclass phenomenon that people remain unsuccessful in getting married. With this, the author turns his responsiveness to the lives which black women live. Through his book the author has attempted to answer this question: Why the ratio of black women who never married is three times the ratio of white women of the same category and why the rati of black women is half the ratio of white women who are married? Theoretical Feminist Approach

The theoretical perspective which exemplifies this book is Black Feminism. The concept of Black Feminism claims that are intricately attached together. Alice Walker's theory of Womanism was one amongst the theories which branched out from Black Feminism.
