Introduction

The aim of this writing assignment is to discuss and analyze the cause and effect of corporal punishment on children. Corporal punishment is referred to a physical punishment in which intentional physical pain in inflicted as a punishment for an offence. It is done to enforce discipline among children but there have been seen varied effects of this. The committee of United Nation on children's rights has regarded it against the basic rights of children. It is of the view that Corporal punishment should not be given to children. In 49 states of America, corporal punishment for children to enforce discipline is against the law. According to the survey which was conducted in the year 200 across the United States, all the parents considered it an evil practice (Straus & Kantor, 1994). Corporal punishment has been banned in more than 42 countries. However, it is legal in some parts of the world. Numerous agencies have been established all over the world to end the brutality of corporal punishment for children. Corporal punishment is illegal and should be banned in the remaining parts of the world (Cheng, 2013).

Corporal punishment is commonly used as discipline technique in most of the American. This action has become controversial within the child development and psychological communities. This paper will view the positive and negative aspects behavior of children associated with corporal punishment. The studies on corporal punishment were conducted in longitudinal session taking the data of several years. The main purpose of the taking more years data is to analyze the impacts of corporal punishment over number of years. The purpose is to explore the physical and mental after effects of corporal punishment on the mind of children. The paper view multiple perspectives on the study and thorough analysis have been done to for conclusion and recommendations (Straus & Kantor, 1994).

Summary and Analysis of the Research

Elizabeth Thompson Gershoff, has conducted a study using a large-scale meta-analysis of 88 studies. She presents both positive and negative aspects of behavior associated with corporal punishment. The Meta-analysis conducted, 62 years of data is included in the study. The study was conducted to examine the relationship between corporal punishment and child personality. The study conducted to examine several issues related with corporal punishment including immediate compliance, moral internalization, and quality of relationship with parent, and physical abuse from that parent. The study concluded that children suffered from corporal punishment suffered from severe mental health issue, aggression, and criminal or antisocial behavior. Gershoff founded a strong relationship between corporal punishment and child behavior (Gershoff, 2010).

The research founded that all the associations were negative with increased aggression, antisocial behavior adopted by children, over period of time. The single positive outcome is the immediate compliance of child as a result of corporal punishment.
