Part 1

The explanation of the mathematical skill that is it is practical as it is entertaining: how to determine the day of the week of any date. We first describe the method before discussing its mathematical foundation.

Every day of the week is given a code number:

Sunday = 1, Monday = 2, Tuesday = 3, Wednesday = 4, Thursday = 5, Friday = 6, Saturday = 7 or 0

Next we assign a code to each month:

January = 1*, February = 4* , March = 4, April = 0, May = 2 , June = 5, July = ...
