The interview

Date and location

The interview was taken on Sunday, 19th of March at 3:00 pm. I requested her the day before, and she invited me to her house at 5pm, for tea. The interview was taken at her house in an empty room.

Recording Method

The method I used to record the interview was by using a tape recorder and a Sony F55 video camera. I used both, the tape recorder and the camera, to avoid skipping something she said.

Hello Miss Olainka. How are you today?

I am good Harjit, thank you. How is everything at your end?

Question 2

Things are fine with your prayers. So, as we decided to conduct an interview, regarding your nursing and your role in the profession, why don't you start by telling us something about yourself?

My name is Akinlolu Olainka. I am an RN nurse in the DC, hospital. I am also a member of DCNA (District of Columbia Nurses Association). I am from Nigeria and black African women.

Primary question 1

Question

Miss Olainka, when did you come to United States of America, and did you wished to continue the studies? And most importantly, Why did you prefer United States to practice the profession?

I came here around sixteen years back in 1997. I was an associate nurse back then. Yes, I completed by and Master in Nurse practitioner from Washington DC. I found US as a far bigger state than Nigeria, and I decided to practice here, so that I will get more practical experience. United States has a vast population with a diversity of races and ethnicities. When I came here, I decided to stay here and practice my profession in the states. Even when there was an outbreak of swine flu a few years back, I didn't leave and stayed here.

Follow Up

Do you have any regrets regarding the decsision so far?

No, im perfectly happy with my decision, as states has polished me as a nurse in my professionso far.

How has the experience regarding the nursing practice has been here so far?

My experience has been great. I am here from past 16 years, and I am a perfect example of the witness of the changes that took place in these years.

Primary question 2

As you had just mentioned the outbreak of swine flu, when did that outbreak occur? Do you find any difference in the type of treatment given by he nurses back then, and now? How were the patients being treated in hospitals, and what were the duties you, as a nurse had to perform?

The outbreak of pandemic swine flu occurred in 2009. when the swine flu outbreak was termed as pandemic, travelling from Mexico, a few people knew about the problem in the beginning. The awareness was limited, and so were the resources. The nurse's shortage was at its peak.
