Introduction

Addiction in adolescents is a very important public health issue. Risks associsted with the adolescents addiction can be different from one substance to another. Such substances can be highly hazardous for the adolescents, therefore, it is of significant to take such variables into consideration for instance; information and experience of using addiction in adolescents, degree of personal motivation and the impact of dopant elements along with certain properties of dependence in adolescents. At the beginning of addiction, adolescents get some gratification apparent, like a habit. But soon their behavior begins to have a negative impact not only on their life but it impacts on the people around them also. Addictive behaviors in adolescents take place by pleasure, relief and other compensation in the short term but cause pain, disaster, desolation and a multitude of problems in the long term. This paper will be focusing on the intervention through assessment in order to identify chemical dependence in youngsters/ adolescents.

Chemical Dependence

The phrase of “Chemical Dependency” is generally used in combination with and sometimes changed with the phrases like dependent chemically, chemical dependence, drug addiction, alcoholism, drug habit, addiction, substance dependence and substance abuse. In literal meaning, the term of chemical dependency revolves around diseases or primary illness which is influenced by addiction to anything mood-altering chemical. Alcoholism and drug addiction both comes under chemical dependency. A person dependent chemically is unable to prevent from drinking or taking specific mood-altering chemical instead spiritual, legal, vocational, and economic and health outcomes. It is an addictive ailment that does not consider age, religion, sex, race or economic status. Because of the fact that it is chronic and progressive it becomes fatal ultimately if it is left un-treated. Substance abuse is described as wrongful and destructive behavior related to the misuse of substances such as drugs, medications or alcohol, which results in injury (Townsend, 2009). It is often a blind disease and may progress undetected for a substantial amount of time. Unfortunately, by the time substance abuse is suspected, the abuser may be well on their way to severe illness and negative life altering changes. Various risk factors exist in connection with substance abuse including genetics, low self-esteem, peer pressure, negative family and social environment, traumatic events and high-risk behavior (ATI, 2011). Substance abuse can be physically and mentally addictive therefore, early intervention through effective assessment may prove extremely beneficial in reducing the number of potential victims of this disease. School nurses are vital in early intervention of substance abuse since high risk behavior is often seen in adolescents.
