Introduction

An individual's self concept is established into the subconscious through early interaction with family and friends. The belief about one self is more deeply programmed if the interaction is intense. An individuals' self perception rules his or her interaction with the world. People's behaviour with each other highly relies on their emotional states and self concept (Kotschevar, 2006: 4). This paper is an account of the effect of emotions and self perception on interpersonal communication by addressing the way food service employees are communicated daily.

Interpersonal skills are the artefact of self concept and emotions. Communication behaviour is influenced by the way people perceive themselves and the emotional states they experience. Effective interpersonal communication is imperative in the workplace to prevent potential workplace conflicts, to make people better listeners and to deal with customers Employers can inculcate an effective communication process among the food service employees through daily feedback, suggestions and the resilience of open communication environment (Kotschevar, 2006: 5). Employees need to be trained in a way that their self concept and emotions do not obstruct the flow of effective communication.

This paper will be examining an aspect of interpersonal behaviour. For this purpose we will analyse interactions between three employees in the company, and will analyse the behaviour observed using appropriate theories. In the end we will draw conclusions and make recommendations to improve the quality of the interactions. Recommendations will be linked to for the benefit of the employer of the food service company to make their employee's interpersonal skills.

Overview of Interpersonal Communication observational study

The way people communicate depicts their behaviour and self perception. It is important to analyze the communication behaviour that various personality types portray. It arises basic questions for instance, is the decision of engaging into a communication reflects self concept? How people's self concepts affect their information seeking behaviour? But before going into the detail of these questions, it is important to determine the concept of interpersonal communication (Perkins, 2008: 8). Interpersonal communication is defined as one on one interaction of people with each other depicting how and why people behave and interact. Interpersonal communication can take place directly or indirectly. The indirect communication is referred to an individuals' body language i.e. gestures and postures, whereas the direct communication accredits one on one conversation. Interpersonal communication is the demonstration of self concept, emotions, attitude and behaviour.

Interpersonal communication is very necessary as it relates to the self concept and self efficacy. To evaluate these skills importance we will be observing three employees in the food service company. The three of them are from serving department. In this department they are working since several months (Byers, 1996: 109). All these three employees are the best and hard workers in the company.
